Abstract

Spinal stenosis is the congenital or acquired narrowing of the spinal canal or foramina in either the lateral (apophyseal) or anteroposterior (AP) (laminar) direction resulting in compression on the spinal roots laterally and of the cauda equina anteroposteriorly. This narrowing can occur anywhere along the spinal column, from occiput to sacrum. The diagnosis of spinal stenosis is only established when symptoms of neurogenic claudication or cervical myelopathy are present. Stenosis in the cervical spine manifests with upper motor neuron signs and myelopathy, representing an injury to the spinal cord. Stenosis in the thoracic spine can also result in long tract signs and myelopathy. Stenosis of the lumbar spine (below L2) is a lesion of the nerve roots and presents with the classic constellation of findings of neurogenic claudication.
