The main concern of this chapter is to introduce rib pain. Rib pain can be associated with rib fractures secondary to trauma, stress fractures associated with activity, infiltration of bone or neural tissues by tumor, or a number of musculoskeletal disorders. Key to the diagnosis and treatment of rib pain is exclusion of more serious generators of chest pain to include a thorough investigation into cardiac, pulmonary, vascular, or gastrointestinal etiologies. Initial treatment for rib stress fractures begins with grading of the fracture to determine the optimal strategy. Activity modification to avoid causative activity and physical therapy to educate proper technique are imperative. Immobilization or rest may be necessary based on symptom profile.
