Abstract

The main concern of this chapter is to discuss myofascial pain. Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a broad term used to describe pain due to a muscular or tendinous etiology. It specifically requires the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), which are palpable contracted bands of muscle fibers. MPS can be distinguished from other muscular pain syndromes by the presence of taut skeletal muscle bands, reproducible, localized pain, autonomic symptoms, and absence of multiple pain generators. MPS can be quickly diagnosed on history and a simple physical examination. Long-term relief options for MPS include muscle relaxants, antidepressants, cognitive behavioral therapy, and long-acting benzodiazepines. Lidocaine patches are easily applied agents with a low side effect profile. They are effective in the treatment of MPS although they do not generate as great of a pain reduction compared to needling. The details about first-line therapy and second-line therapy are also provided in this chapter.
