The ethical practice of pain medicine is consistent with the ethical practice of medicine in general—seeking to help patients by relieving pain and suffering from various collateral symptoms while trying to cure underlying disease or facilitate recovery from injury or surgery. This chapter will provide an overview of key aspects of ethical multidisciplinary pain management, with focus upon opioid therapy, particularly for non-cancer chronic pain. Pain management should be carried out via a multidisciplinary treatment approach, including procedural interventions, pharmacotherapy, psychosocial-behavioral strategies, integrative-complementary-alternative approaches, physical medicine and rehabilitation and related physical and/or occupational therapies, and other treatment modalities each targeting specific aspects of the overall pain experience.
