Effective pain management techniques are necessary due to the rising costs of pain-related healthcare. A comprehensive medical evaluation is needed for effective treatment. To successfully manage pain, treatment should address biological, psychological, and social factors, as exemplified by the biopsychosocial model. This is often best accomplished through an interdisciplinary model of pain management. Interdisciplinary pain management encompasses a coordination of services in a comprehensive program with frequent communication among all healthcare professionals engaged in a patient’s treatment. Current empirically supported pain management interventions tend to be based in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
