Abstract

Meditation and hypnosis are two relaxation techniques used in chronic pain management, complementary to the conventional pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies. In general, meditation is safe and can be applied to the patients with chronic pain of various etiologies. The evidence from a number of clinical trials suggests that meditation significantly improves patient’s overall well-being in fibromyalgia, chronic headache, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic low back pain. Hypnosis requires patients to engage in sustained or focused attention or concentration. Biofeedback is a technique that improves an individual’s ability to voluntarily control physiologic activities by providing information back to the individual. The most common feedback given is regarding muscle tension using surface electromyography (EMG) electrodes or the skin temperature using a thermistor.
