Abstract

This chapter describes the intravenous (IV) drip rate calculation. IV fluids are given by two ways either by gravity flow or by pump. If given by gravity flow, to regulate the rate nurses should calculate the flow rate in drops/minute. If giving via infusion pump, the nurses should calculate mL/hr of infusion. Amount of solution to be given (volume), duration for which it has to be given (hour or minutes) and drop factor of IV tubing are needed to calculate the drip rate. An example of IV) drip rate calculation is also provided in this chapter.
