In psychiatric assessments (compared to a standard medical assessment), the important point are history is of great importance, systematic examination considers the patient’s thinking, emotion and behavior (mental state), psychiatric assessment includes the routine interviewing of an informant (usually a relative or friend of the patient), especially when the illness affects the patient’s ability to give an accurate history, and sometimes it may take an hour or more time because of its greater complexity, a full psychiatric history and detailed mental state examination (MSE). Mood disorders, somatoform disorders, factitious disorder, psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse disorders, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), medications in psychiatry, delirium, alcohol misuse and dependence, substance-related disorders, sleep disorders, eating disorders, puerperal disorders, and psychosomatic disorder are covered in this chapter.
