Abstract

This chapter is written in the question and answer format, which gives the description on pancreas. Acute pancreatitis is a syndrome of acute inflammation of the exocrine pancreas gland initiated by an acute injury to the parenchyma of the pancreas. This chapter covers the pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and endocrine tumors of pancreas. Interstitial edematous acute pancreatitis is characterized by acute inflammation of the pancreatic parenchyma and peripancreatic tissues, but without tissue necrosis. Necrotizing acute pancreatitis is characterized by inflammation associated with pancreatic parenchymal necrosis and/or peripancreatic necrosis. Chronic pancreatitis is defined as chronic inflammation of the pancreas presenting as recurrent pain, characterized by the presence of permanent and progressive morphologic or functional damage to the pancreas.
