Abstract

Medical dictionaries describe asepsis as the process of removing pathogenic organisms or protecting against infection by such organisms. Both patients and the media have demonstrated an increased awareness of infection control issues in dentistry. Aseptic techniques, therefore, are specific standards developed to reduce the potential for infection by microorganisms during invasive dental procedures. Over time, the role of infectious microorganisms in pathogenesis of dental diseases is been discovered. Dental professionals are exposed to wide variety of microorganisms in blood and saliva of patients, making infection control procedures of utmost importance.
