Abstract

Like all health care clinical disciplines, dentistry is focused on the prevention or elimination of disease. Specific to endodontics is the prevention or elimination of pulp space infections and associated inflammatory sequelae. Micro organisms cause virtually all pathosis of the pulp and the periradicular tissues. Although the vast majority of our knowledge deals with bacteria, we are now aware of the potential for endodontic disease to be associated with fungi and viruses. To effectively treat endodontic infections, clinicians must recognize the cause and effect of microbial invasion of the dental pulp space and surrounding periradicular tissues. Knowledge of the microorganisms associated with endodontic disease is necessary to develop a basic understanding of the disease process and a sound rationale for effective management of patients with endodontic infections.
