Essentials of Medical Pharmacology

Medical pharmacology is a balanced synthesis of basic and clinical pharmacology with pharmacotherapeutics. It is one of the most dynamic medical disciplines with innovations and developments as well as attrition occurring rapidly. This book is divided into 70 chapters which are organized into 14 sections. The distinctive feature of this book is a systematic and structured format with hierarchically arranged headings and subheadings. The opening sentence in most chapters defines the class of drugs covered followed by their classification presented in eye-catching charts which help create pictoral memory. A brief description of the target disease and its importance / prevalence is included wherever appropriate. The ‘prototype drug’ approach has been adopted by fully describing the representative drug of the class, followed by distinguishing features of the other members. In the present edition, all chapters have been revisited and thoroughly updated. Priority has been accorded to drugs marketed in India, including all those released recently. Infrequently used drugs are described in small type. The latest therapeutic and prophylactic regimens recommended by the National Health Programs for TB, including MDR / XDR-TB, leprosy, HIV, malaria, Kala-azar, filariasis, viral hepatitis, etc. are described. A separate chapter has been devoted to alcohol and drugs of abuse due to current importance of the topic. Another new chapter deals with environmental toxicology and management of poisonings, snake bites, dog bites, scorpion sting, etc. The ‘Problem-directed Study’ at the end of most chapters provides an exercise in therapeutic decision making, which is an important objective of training medical graduates.
