Abstract

The number of ostomates in India cannot be cared individually by enterostomal therapy (ET) nurses. This is because of the dearth of ET nurses, non-availability of ET nurses in the cities other than Metros. This situation is still compounded to the illiterates, poor and patients without family support. Student nurses need to acquire a positive attitude about ostomy. Before beginning to care for patients with ostomies, students often express both fear and disgust at the prospect of dealing and coping with ostomies. Because of their own feelings they may not notice the individual behind the stoma. These feelings can be addressed by use of a group process. Having an ET nurse as a facilitator in the group process is often helpful.
