This chapter basically talks about the basic implant surgery. Accurate and atraumatic preparation of the bone at the implant site is paramount to the successful placement of the implant. The diagnostic set up, surgical stent and relevant radiographs should be available. The surgeon should have a clear idea of the number, size and planned locations of the implants as explained in the previous article. Besides the planned implants an adequate stock of implants should be kept ready for any eventualities arising during surgery. These are mandatory requisites because success in implant surgery will largely depend upon meticulous preoperative planning. The surgeon should have adequate training in the procedure and should be able to handle any unforeseen circumstances. Good operating light and good high volume suction are two surgical protocol of basic implant surgery, which are very important for surgery. A detailed discussion on the placement of an Ankylos implant in standard posterior sites—step-by-step procedures has been also given in this chapter.
