A systematic approach by NHS for sustaining and improving the quality of patient care is described as clinical governance. The concept of clinical governance is mainly determined by four words in this definition: framework, accountability, quality of services, and environment. Altogether, all the processes and systems under clinical governance help in providing an umbrella of safety and quality of patient care. These systems are in place not only for the clinicians, but for every healthcare professional coming in contact with the patient. The main focus of services in the NHS has been shifted to patient-centred care. All these elements are based on the five principles i.e. team work, leadership, ownership, system awareness, and communication. Of the various elements of clinical governance, the concept of risk management and clinical audit would be described in details in this chapter.
