Abstract

Recently, fetal growth abnormalities, especially fetal growth restriction is responsible for a large proportion of the infant mortality, morbidity, cesarean section rates and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay. Fetal growth has multiple factors that determine it. These can be broadly subdivided into maternal factors, fetal factors and multifactorial. Maternal medical conditions like diabetes, hypercoagulability conditions, autoimmune diseases, infections and hypertensive states are known to adversely affect fetal growth. With regards to fetal growth, the vascular resistance and perfusion reflected in the PI as per the centile charts for the gestation is the primary index. The vessels assessed are the uterine artery, umbilical artery, middle cerebral artery (MCA) and ductus venosus.
