Abstract

The horizons of fetal medicine are expanding in leaps and bounds over past three decades due to concomitant advances in fetal imaging, prenatal diagnosis, molecular genetics and fetal therapy. The first report of prenatal therapeutic intervention was intraperitoneal blood transfusion for severe fetal anemia from Rhesus isoimmunization. All fetal interventions are truly maternal-fetal interventions, and the most important consideration in all fetal interventions is the safety of the mother. The goal of fetal medicine is to help the parents choose what the best option for them is and hence counseling forms the cornerstone of fetal medicine. Doctors’ attitudes toward fetal anomalies usually result from a combination of knowledge and experience, scientific interest, ethical principles, personal beliefs and legal constraints.
