Abstract

Heart disease in pregnancy encompasses a myriad of disorders with varying outcomes ranging from uneventful to lethal. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects 0.2–4% of pregnant women but account for one-third of all pregnancy-related deaths.1 The maternal mortality in CVD patients is about 1% which is 100 times more than the normal pregnant population. Congenital heart disease (CHD) comprises the largest category of CVD in the West while rheumatic heart disease (RHD) constitutes 30% of CVD in pregnancy in developing countries. The cardiac disease in pregnancy (CARPREG) score system is comprised of four clinical features— prior cardiac event, NYHA class III/IV or cyanosis, valvular or outflow tract obstruction and LV dysfunction. Treat heart failure and arrhythmias during pregnancy as for nonpregnant patients, except avoid certain drugs.
