Abstract

Notochord is derived from the mesoderm and forms the axis of the embryo. Cells from the primitive streak proliferate to form the notochordal process between the ectoderm and endoderm. This process extends from the caudal end of prochordal plate to the cranial end of primitive streak. A pit called as the blastopore appears in the primitive node and further deepens to form the notochordal canal. Neurenteric canal is formed between the amniotic cavity and the primary yolk sac cavity. The notochord gets solidified with the mesodermal cells and forms the definite notochord. In future, as the notochord disappears it leaves behind some of its remnants such as nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disk and apical ligament of dens.
