Abstract

Brain, being a vital organ has a rich and continuous blood supply by two major sources of great vessels of head and neck regions. An actual anastomosis is present in the form of circle of Willis. Internal carotid artery is a branch of common carotid artery. Internal carotid artery does not give any branch in the cervical region. Brain is supplied by two major arterial systems internal carotid arterial system and vertebrobasilar arterial system. Anastomosis is present between the branches of these arteries in the interpeduncular cistern known as circle of Willis. Deoxygenated blood from brain and its covering is drained by two sets of veins in superficial and deep planes, into the adjacent dural venous sinuses. Dural venous sinus is the space between two layers of dura mater lined by endothelium, in which deoxygenated blood flows. Circle of Willis is an actual anastomosis of internal carotid arterial system and vertebrobasilar arterial system.
