The components of brainstem are midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. They have the nuclei for attachment of cranial nerves. Midbrain or mesencephalon develops from the middle brain vesicle of cranial part of neural tube. It has outer white matter and inner gray matter. The cavity of midbrain, the aqueduct of Sylvius or cerebral aqueduct is present within the central gray matter. It communicates superiorly with third ventricle and inferiorly with fourth ventricle. Pons is one of the components of hindbrain or rhombencephalon. It is one of the two derivatives from metencephalon part of neural tube. It is a part of brainstem that has nuclei of fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth cranial nerves. Pons is located in the posterior cranial fossa, present over the clivus. Medulla oblongata develops from myelencephalon part of neural tube. Medulla oblongata, pons and cerebellum constitute the hindbrain.
