The objective of this chapter is to introduce the nervous tissue. Nerve tissue is able to conduct impulses. Nerve cell is a neuron. It has cell body, short process known as dendrite and a long process called as axon. A group of neurons present outside the brain and spinal cord is a ganglion. If the neurons conduct the impulses perceived from periphery towards the brain, they are sensory neurons. If the neurons conduct the impulses generated from the brain to the skeletal muscle, they are motor neurons. If the impulses are conducted from brain to either smooth muscle or an exocrine gland, these neurons are autonomic neurons. This chapter also covers the microscopic studies of transverse section of optic nerve, transverse section of a peripheral nerve, spinal or sensory ganglion, and sympathetic or autonomic ganglion.
