Abstract

Nose is the special sensory organ for perception of smell or olfaction. It is positioned in between as well as inferior to orbital cavities and superior to oral cavity. Nose is a single organ, but divided by a partition in the midline, into right and left nasal cavities. On each side the nasal cavity is bounded by septum of the nose in the midline and lateral wall of the nose, away from the midline. Bridge of the nose is the upper, narrow part present between the eyes. Ala of the nose is the wide, anteroinferior part of lateral wall of nose. External nostrils or external nasal apertures are the two openings seen anteriorly. Posteriorly, nasal cavity communicates with nasopharynx through the posterior nasal aperture or choana. Air cavities that are present within the bones and communicate with the nasal cavity are called paranasal air sinuses. Functions of paranasal air sinuses are reduction in the weight of skull, resonance of voice, to maintain the moisture of nasal mucosa by draining into the nasal cavity, and humidification of inhaled air.
