Abstract

Cranial cavity is enclosed by the bones forming the neurocranium. Vault is the top convex part of cranium. After removing the vault, the contents of cranial cavity are observed. Brain with its coverings, foldings of dura mater, dural venous sinuses, arteries, cerebrospinal fluid present within the ventricles of brain and subarachnoid space, cranial nerves, trigeminal ganglion and hypophysis cerebri are the contents of cranial cavity. This chapter covers the meninges, dural venous sinuses, emissary veins, pituitary gland or hypophysis cerebri, and trigeminal ganglion. Dura mater has two layers. They are outer endosteal or endocranial layer and the inner meningeal layer of dura mater. Space between the two layers of dura mater is lined by endothelium, in which deoxygenated blood flows. Emissary Veins is the venous channel carrying the deoxygenated blood, which connects intracranially any one of the dural venous sinuses and the veins outside the cranium.
