Abstract

Ear is one of the special sensory organs for perception of hearing and balancing. Ear has three parts. They are external ear, middle ear, and internal ear. Development of auricle or pinna is from six auricular hillocks, present along the first pharyngeal groove. Middle ear cavity develops from distal part of tubotympanic recess. Tubotympanic recess is formed by the union of dorsal part of first and second pharyngeal pouches. Membranous labyrinth of internal ear develops from the otic vesicle. The surface ectoderm dorsal to second pharyngeal arch near the rhombencephalon part of neural tube forms a thickening known as otic placode. This invaginates to become a pit initially and then the otic sac, which gets detached from the surface ectoderm, forms otic vesicle.
