Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the development of tongue. Source of development of tongue are Anterior two-thirds of tongue—first pharyngeal arch, Posterior one-third of tongue—third pharyngeal arch, Posterior most part of tongue—fourth pharyngeal arch, and Muscles of tongue—occipital somites and fourth pharyngeal arch. From the first pharyngeal arch, three lingual swellings appear. The three lingual swellings enlarge in size and unite with each other, to form the anterior two-thirds of tongue. The tuberculum impar forms a small rhomboid shaped part, anterior to the foramen cecum. The foramen cecum is present in the midline posterior to tuberculum impar represents the site of beginning of the thyroglossal duct.
