The objective of this chapter is to introduce the development of face. The face develops from following five processes frontonasal process, right and left maxillary processes, and right and left mandibular processes. An elongation from the cranial bulge of the growing embryo forms the frontonasal process. The first pharyngeal arch divides into maxillary process superiorly and mandibular process inferiorly. The mandibular processes of right and left side unite in the midline. The mandible is the first formed bone in the skull. In the frontonasal process, a pair of nasal placodes and a pair of lens placodes appear. In the 5th week of intrauterine life, the frontonasal process appears in the developing human embryo. Nasal placode and lens placode are the ectodermal thickenings in the frontonasal process. The first pharyngeal arch mesoderm forms the mandibular process. From the mandibular process, the maxillary process arises. Both the side mandibular processes unite in the midline. The space between these processes is the stomodeum.
