Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to discuss etiopathogenesis, clinical features and screening of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP is a retinal vasoproliferative disorder affecting preterm and low-birth-weight babies. Over the years, it has emerged as a major cause of childhood blindness across the world and is now emerging in epidemic proportions in developing countries due to mushrooming of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and survival of more preterm babies. Tele screening is an important novel addition in the screening of ROP. Several large telescreening studies like SUNDROP telemedicine initiative have clearly established high sensitivity and specificity of digital screening for detecting treatment warranted ROP. Timely screening of premature infants at risk of developing ROP is important as early detection and treatment can result in improved visual outcomes.
