BOOK TITLE: Retina: Medical and Surgical Management
This chapter basically talks about the low vision management in retinal diseases. “A person with low vision is one who has impairment of visual functioning even after treatment and/or standard refractive correction, and has a visual acuity of less than 6/18 to light perception, or a visual field of less than 10 degrees from the point of fixation, but who uses, or is potentially able to use, vision for planning and/or execution of a task for which vision is essential. Currently, India has around 12 million blind people which make India home to one-third of the world’s blind population. Uncorrected refractive errors are the major cause of visual impairment (about 49%). Other causes include cataract (25.8%) and glaucoma (2.8%). Other potential causes include conditions like age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) corneal opacity, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy. Investigations and evaluation of low-vision patient, interventions that increase the contrast reserves, subjective testing of patients with media opacities, magnification associated with low vision systems, glare and photophobia, contact lenses, telescope, low vision near systems, etc. are some other important topics, which are also covered in this chapter.
