Abstract

This chapter presents discussion on miscellaneous antibiotics and covers lincosamides, glycopeptides, vancomycin, teicoplanin, and polypeptide antibiotics. Clindamycin is derivative of lincomycin. It inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 50S ribosomal subunit. It is mainly used in anaerobic infections, pneumocystis jiroveci, toxoplasma gondii infection, streptococcal and staphylococcal infection, and prophylaxis. Vancomycin inhibits cell wall synthesis (e.g. penicillin), also weakens cell membrane. Polypeptide antibiotics include polymyxin and colistin, bacitracin, sodium fusidate, mupirocin (pseudomonic acid), fosfomycin, streptogramins, oxazolidinones, and daptomycin.
