This chapter covers discussion on uterine stimulants (oxytocics) and uterine relaxants (tocolytics). Uterine stimulants also called oxytocics or ecbolics. They are classified into oxytocin, ergot derivatives—ergometrine, methylergometrine, and prostaglandins E2 (PGE2), PGF2α, 15-methyl PGF2α and misoprostol. Oxytocin is a nonapeptide hormone stored and secreted by posterior pituitary with antidiuretic hormone (ADH). PG play an important role during menstruation and parturition. PGE2 and PGF2 stimulate uterine contractions. They are Involved in dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia, hence non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are beneficial. Uterine relaxants inhibit uterine—contractions and relax the uterus. At the end of this chapter there are 18 questions along with their crisp and to the point answers have been also given, which will be of benefit for answering the short answers and even a viva voce question.
