Abstract

This chapter covers discussion on antiepileptics. Seizure transient alteration of behavior due to the disordered, synchronous and rhythmic firing of populations of brain neurons. Disorder of brain function characterized by periodic and unpredictable occurrence of seizures with unconsciousness and/or amnesia is defined as epilepsy. Seizures are classified as partial seizures and generalized seizures. Phenobarbitone increases activation of GABAA receptors hence, promotes GABA-mediated Cl channel opening. Carbamazepine, ethosuximide, valproic acid, benzodiazepines, newer antiepileptics, possible causes of antiepileptic drug inefficacy, and discontinuation of antiepileptic drug are the other important topics which are discussed briefly in this chapter.
