Plasma expanders are high molecular weight substances. They remain in body for long time, hence increases volume of circulatory fluid. Ideal plasma expander exerts oncotic pressure equivalent to plasma, pharmacologically inert, and nonantigenic and long acting. Dextrans are polysaccharides obtained from sugar beet. The osmotic pressure exerted is similar to plasma proteins. It improves microcirculation by preventing rouleax formation of RBC’s and antisludging effect. Intravenous fluids are sterile solutions and they are used for replacement of fluid, electrolytes and nutrition. There are 3 types of IV fluids depending on osmolality, i.e. isotonic, hypotonic or hypertonic. Acute circulatory failure resulting in decrease perfusion to tissues is defined as shock. The various types of shock include hypovolemic shock, septic shock, cardiogenic shock, anaphylactic shock, and neurogenic shock. Immediate treatment of shock is necessary, which can be done by identifying and treating the cause, and maintaining the blood pressure and plasma volume.
