Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the non-cancer chronic pain management. Any pain persisting for more than 6 weeks after its regular treatment can be called chronic non-cancer pain. Pain should be assessed, noted (VAS or NRS score) and then after counseling the patient (about need for medications and ill effects of nontreatment of pain) treatment with medication should be started. Regular treatment can be either medication or physiotherapy or counseling or surgery or any standard treatment for a particular pain problem. Commonly seen chronic pain patients of non-cancer (benign and non-traumatic) are spine pain, headache and facial pain, neuralgia or neuropathy, postsurgery persistent pain, chronic joint pain, central pain syndromes etc. This chapter covers the assessment of pain, treatment of chronic pain, and nonpharmacological treatments. In this chapter, two cases are also discussed.
