Abstract

Cancer patients commonly experience more than one kind of pain. The pain may be constant or intermittent, or acute pain superimposed (breakthrough pain) on chronic background pain. The pain may be disease related or treatment related. Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety and cognitive dysfunction may influence pain perception and contribute to the intensity of the pain. This chapter covers the causes of pain in cancer patient, management of cancer pain, and case example of cancer pain management. Opioids are the most common drug abused by patients and pleasure seekers by using opioid not for pain control but for pleasure and recreational activities. This phenomenon is unfortunately slowly but surely growing in India especially in metros where opioid are available otherwise most of these patients might resort to street drugs.
