Abstract

A wide variety of materials are used in dentistry and the dental hygienist and other paradental personnel should be familiar with the general structure, composition, properties and uses of these materials. Filling materials can be divided into two types, temporary filling materials and permanent filling materials. To produce a dental impression, the impression material is placed in the mouth in a special tray when it is in proper plastic or pliable or moldable state and held in position until the materials set or firm. The tray together with thin material is removed from the mouth. From this negative reproduction is then made a positive model in stone plaster. This model is the positive duplication of oral tissues. Zinc oxide eugenol is metallic oxide impression paste used as corrective wash impressions of completely edentulous mouths.
