Abstract

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and the aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. Approach to oral surgery must be psychological, biological and scientific. Knowledge of surgical bacteriology is necessary. Surgery is undertaken to obviate pain, remove infection and disease, and restore function and aesthetics of body tissues. Injuries of the face and jaw are frequently associated with other injuries. One should be aware that the care of injuries of the maxillofacial region is a part of the total treatment plan. Mandibular fractures may involve the muscular attachment of the tongue with posterior displacement and resultant asphyxia. The best treatment for jaw fractures is immediate intermaxillary fixation. Maxillary fractures may occur by itself or may be associated with fractures of zygomatic bone, nasal bones, and mandible or with other cranial bones. Mandibular fractures and maxillary fractures are further classified. Planning for nutritional care in oral and maxillofacial surgeries and operation theater protocol are also discussed in this chapter.
