Abstract

Knowledge of the anatomy of the periodontal tissues and their associated structures is essential for understanding periodontal diseases. This chapter describes the clinical and microscopic features of healthy periodontal tissues. The tissue that invest and support the teeth including the gingival, alveolar mucosa, cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone is called peridontium. Gingiva is a kind of masticatory mucosa that envelops the cervical areas of teeth and forms the covering of alveolar process. The gingival sulcus is an area of potential space between a tooth and the surrounding gingival tissue and is lined by sulcular epithelium. Histologically, the sulcus is lined with nonkeratinized sulcular epithelium and extends from the crest of the marginal gingival to the most coronal level of the junctional epithelium. The different parts of gingiva are epithelium, connective tissue, and gingival crevicular fluid are covered. Other topics discussed include clinical descriptive criteria, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.
