Abstract

The chapter gives a brief overview on biomedical waste management. Biomedical waste is any waste, which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals, or in research activities, or in production or testing off biological. Biohazard symbol and cytotoxic hazard symbol are also illustrated. Biomedical waste can adversely affect human health by three methods, namely hazards for patients attending health care, hazards for healthcare workers, and hazards for community at large. Steps in biomedical waste management are waste survey, categorization of waste, segregation and safe storage, choice of bins and receptacles, and handling and treating of waste. Containers of regulated medical waste are to be labeled and/or identified in compliance with local regulations. Occupational safety and health administration hazard communication standard is discussed in this chapter.
