Abstract

Tooth powders or toothpastes are mechanical aids to cleansing and polishing of teeth with brush. They consist of many ingredients like abrasive, Detergent or cleansing agent, antiseptic, fluorides, flavoring agent, coloring agent, sweetening agent, humectant, and thickening agent. Tooth powders are converted into pastes by use of syrup, honey, and glycerin. Fluoride tooth paste helps prevent tooth decay and strengthen the tooth enamel by remineralization of the enamel surface. Deodorants eliminate halitosis and leave behind freshness and tingling sensation. Simple rinsing of the mouth with plain water will remove mechanically any detachable or soluble debris. It removes bacteria and their products by its irrigation power. The mechanical action is increased if used with compressed air and carbon dioxide sprays. Acids and Alkalis make a soothing and bland mouthwash. Anesthetic mouthwash produces and acts as surface anesthetic. There are medicated dentifrices also available like antiplaque and antigingivitis dentifrices, anticalculus dentifrices, and anticaries dentifrice.
