Abstract

The chapter describes about the histology of soft and hard dental tissues. The hard dental tissues include enamel, dentin, cementum, and alveolar bone. The soft dental tissues include pulp, periodontal ligament, and gingiva. Enamel, the outermost covering of tooth which lies adjacent to the dentin, contains enamel rods, rod sheath, and cementing interrod substances. Dentin forms the largest portion of tooth and gives the basic shape to it. Alveolar bone is the thickened ridge bone that comprises the tooth sockets or alveoli on bones holding teeth. Cementum covers the dentin of the anatomical root of teeth. The dental pulp is located in the center of teeth and is composed of living connective tissues and cells called odontoblasts.
