Abstract

TPN is a way of supplying all the nutritional needs of the body by bypassing the digestive system and dripping nutrient solution directly into a vein. TPN is used when individuals cannot or should not get their nutrition through eating. Contents containing TPN are amino acids (protein), lipids (fat), dextrose (carbohydrate), vitamins, electrolytes, minerals, water, and trace elements. Indications of TPN are Crohn’s disease, pancreatitis, extensive burns, severe trauma, protracted diarrhea, postoperative gastrointestinal surgery, necrotizing enterocolitis, intestinal failure, functional immaturity of GI system, and short bowel in children.
