Percutaneous Mitral Valvotomy

by Harikrishnan S

This book focuses on percutaneous mitral valvotomy. A balloon mitral valvotomy is the preferred treatment for mitral valve stenosis. It is a procedure that widens the mitral valve so that blood flows more easily through the heart. Balloon valvotomy is a non-surgical procedure performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory by a cardiologist and a specialized team of nurses and technicians. Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is one of the major problems affecting many developing countries. The lowest estimate of RHD in India reveals that the number of patients is about 2.8 million. This book is divided into seven sections following as introduction, evaluation prior to percutaneous mitral valvotomy, procedure, technical considerations and periprocedural monitoring of PMV, techniques and gadgets of PMV, complications following PMV, PMV in special situations, and long-term outcome following PMV, which are further divided into 59 chapters. A DVD is also published along with this edition, where we have included a full video recording of the procedure being done in cath lab, including the preparation of the hardware. The procedural DVD will help in brushing up the skills for those who do the procedure occasionally.
