Abstract

Culture medium is a nutrient material prepared for the growth of microorganisms in a laboratory. Growth media are used in either liquid (broth) or solid (agar). Glucose broth is yellowish in color while peptone is colorless or less yellowish than glucose broth. Both the media are dispensed in test tubes with cotton plug. Nutrient agar is prepared by adding agar at a concentration of 2% to the nutrient broth. It is the simplest and commonest medium used routinely in microbiology laboratories, to grow non-fastidious bacteria. Blood agar is bright red in color and is opaque when viewed by transmitted light if this consists entirely of 10% blood agar and hemolysis is difficult to see. MacConkey agar is distinct reddish-brown color and is transparent. There are 12 questions along with their crisp and to the point answers are also given at the end of this chapter.
