Medications that act as central nervous system depressants and have sedative and musculoskeletal relaxant properties are called muscle relaxants. Typically, muscle relaxants are prescribed early in a course of back pain, on a short-term basis, to relieve back pain associated with muscle spasms. This chapter covers the baclofen, tizanidine, thiocolchicoside, and metaxalone along with their indication, dose, contraindication, precaution, adverse effect, and drug interaction. Spasticity and painful muscle spasm associated with musculoskeletal conditions are the indications of tizanidine. Severe hepatic dysfunction is the contraindication of tizanidine.
