Abstract

Oncology is the study of tumors. Unrestrained and excessive multiplication of body cells producing lump or swelling, known as tumor or neoplasm. The neoplasm may be either benign or malignant. Malignant tumors or neoplasm accumulate as growth, which penetrate, compress and ultimately destroy the surrounding normal tissue. This chapter covers the carcinomas, sarcomas, mixed tissue tumors, staging, grading, and cancer treatment. Sarcomas are a rare type of cancer when compared to carcinomas, and are derived from supportive and connective tissue, such as bone, fat, muscle, cartilage, bone marrow and lymphatic tissue or from blood cells. Sarcomas account approximately 10% of all malignant neoplasm.
