Abstract

Nutrition (also called nourishment or aliment) is the provision to cells and organisms of the materials necessary in the form of food to support life. Many common health problems can be prevented or alleviated with a healthy diet. There are seven major classes of nutrients namely carbohydrates, fats, fiber, minerals, protein, vitamin and water. These nutrient classes can be categorized as either macronutrients needed in relatively large amounts or micronutrients needed in smaller quantities. The macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats, fiber, proteins and water. The micronutrients are minerals and vitamins. Other micronutrients include antioxidants and phytochemicals. These substances are generally more recent discoveries, which have not yet been recognized as vitamins or as required. Plant nutrition is the study of the chemical elements that are necessary for plant growth. There are several principles that apply to plant nutrition. Some elements are directly involved in plant metabolism.
