Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the epithelium. Epithelium is a collection of cells, with little intercellular material. It covers external and internal surfaces of body. It may be simple or stratified. Tissue is the collection of cells organized to perform specific one or more functions. Four basic tissue types are epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Simple epithelium is made up of single layer of cells. Cells of pseudostratified columnar epithelium touch the basal lamina but all of them do not reach the surface. Nuclei are placed at different levels, giving rise to stratified look. Clinical images are also provided in the chapter.
