Abstract

Dental splinting is defined as the joining of two or more teeth into a rigid unit by means of fixed or removable restorations/devices. Splint by definition is an appliance used for immobilization of injured or diseased parts. A periodontal splint is an appliance used for maintaining or stabilizing mobile teeth in their functional position. The main objective of splinting is to promote healing and to increase the patients\' comfort and function. This chapter covers the harmful aspects, beneficial aspects, objectives of splinting, ideal requirements of a splint, classification of splints, various commonly used splints, characteristics of an ideal splint, principles of splinting, indications and contraindications of splinting, advantages, and disadvantages.
