The most common age changes in all the periodontal tissues are narrowing of the vessel lumen, decreased vascularity, decreased metabolic rate and healing capacity, and decreased tissue elasticity with increasing fibrosis. This chapter covers the general effects of aging, age changes in the periodontium, effects of aging on the progression of periodontal diseases, effects of treatment on the aging individuals, and aging and implants. Placement of implant in an elderly patient is not a contraindication but should be done with a lot of precaution.
